The Tech
As you’d expect, the fairway woods share many of the same technology designs as the LTDx driver family.
The main points for consideration are as follows:
PWR-COR Technology means that a substantial amount of weight is positioned low and forward in the head for faster ball speed with reduced spin rates.
A new H.O.T Face design is a said to deliver more ball speed through machine learning – like the engineering ideas behind Callaway’s Flash Face. Cobra have used data from thousands of impact simulations and created multiple zones with different thicknesses to increase ball speed across a larger area of the face.
The lighter carbon crown then allows more weight to be repositioned low and forward in the PWR-COR to maximize speed and stability.
Cobra LTDx Fairway Wood Review
Looks
It features a compact head size with a slightly, drawn-out, triangular head shape and a contemporary matte finish. The previous Cobra Radspeed fairway woods featured a gloss finish and I have to say I’m a fan of the change, glare on a fairway is not something I welcome.
The sole design of the club isn’t too much to write home about in my opinion – Cobra can over complicate things with designs and colours, but again on top where it matters it’s fairly neat and tidy. A small Cobra logo features as an alignment aid and two slightly raised diagonal lines on the top of the crown frame the ball nicely.
Feel
The sound offered a good balance and plenty of satisfaction when caught out of the screws. It wasn’t too high pitched and loud like you may expect from a Ping fairway but wasn’t low pitched either, like you expect from the likes of TaylorMade. It sounded and felt a little like the Callaway Rogue ST LS Fairway I reviewed earlier in the year, which is never a bad thing…
The Data
The data from my testing showed that the Cobra LTDx packed plenty of punch too.
I was also impressed by the spin numbers with the LTDx, hitting off the ground the spin averages 3462 rpm, which for a 15 degree 3 wood is right where I’d expect it to be.
On-Course Performance
On the golf course I really enjoyed hitting this club off a tee, again I just had a lot of confidence with it. On a very windy day for testing, the LTDx offered me some good long game control in terms of peak height and spin off the tee which is something I can struggle with.
Because I generate a lot of spin at impact, I tend to lean towards the LS version of a driver or fairway wood family but then lose out on the forgiveness my game also demands. With the LTDx I didn’t seem to lose out in either areas and most importantly I still got the forgiveness needed.
There were a couple of occasions in particular off the tee where I hit poor strikes, out of the toe, and the LTDx helped me out producing shots that still found the fairway and left me in good shape.
Cobra LTDx Fairway Wood Verdict
The LTDx is a solid fairway wood, a really solid fairway wood in-fact, that will be tough to beat in 2022. In my opinion it looks good, feels good, offered me plenty of forgiveness in my usual bad strikes with a fairway and it packs a serious punch.
Distance-wise, and especially off a tee this thing flew and flew, even with a fairly standard swing. It’s one of the longest fairways I have tested this year.
Then comes the value for money that we have come to expect from Cobra – with an RRP of the LTDx is cheaper than the TaylorMade Stealth and Callaway Rogue ST and so if you’re looking to get custom fitted for a new fairway wood this year, the LTDx has earnt its place on your testing list alongside the big boys.
Who Is It Aimed At?
Being the standard version, I can see this club suiting a wide-array of golfers – it’s got plenty of benefits that will help a lot of golfers improve their long game.
